4/29/8 GHS Sophomore Boys Hoops Coach Resigns A Galesburg High School boys basketball coach is stepping down. Sophomore coach Eric Lieber yesterday submitted his letter of resignation, citing the desire to dedicate more time to his family and business. Lieber isn't ruling out coaching again sometime in the future.
Former Bullets Boys Basketball Coach Files Civil Suit Against Foes in Dixon A former Knoxville varsity boys basketball coach who was recently fired as the basketball coach at Dixon High School is suing for defamation of character and other reasons. An article on the newspaper website, saukvalley.com, reports attorneys for Steve Sandholm filed the civil lawsuit last week in Lee County against members of a group called the "Save Dixon Sports Committee," the parent company of a local radio station and its general manager. Sandholm is seeking more than $3-million in damages for what he claims is defamation of character, invasion of privacy and interfering with economic gain. Attorneys for Sandholm allege the group organized to publicly defame and discredit him. The Dixon School Board last month voted to rehire Sandholm as the coach, then unanimously reversed that decision last week. Sandholm, who coached at Knoxville between 1984 and 1994, remains the athletic director at Dixon, where his record as the basketball coach was 100-123. 4/28/8 Scores: (Baseball) Rowva (18-4) handled Bushnell/Prairie City/Avon 16-4 (Softball) Monmouth/Roseville edged Macomb 5-4 (Soccer) The Galesburg High School girls soccer team lost to Pekin 2-1. 4/22/8 Bahnks Named A-D At Knoxville The Knoxville School District's search for a new athletic director is over. The District 202 School Board last night hired Chad Bahnks to replace Ellen Davis as assistant principal and athletic director. Davis is stepping down at the end of the school year. Bahnks is currently the athletic director and a teacher at Galva High School. Ricketts Signs With Univeristy of Saint Francis A standout athlete from Galesburg High School plans to continue her volleyball career at the college level in Joliet. Kelly Ricketts signed a letter of intent today with the University of Saint Francis, an NAIA school that's a member of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Ricketts was a key member of the Silver Streaks volleyball team that posted 20 victories this past season and won a regional title. Ricketts is also a standout basketball player who helped lead Galesburg to 24 wins during the 2007-08 campaign. Galesburg High School volleyball coach Marla Clay says Ricketts, the all-time kills leader at GHS, isis a great competitor who will continue to improve at the college level. The head volleyball coach at Saint Francis is Cara Currier, who has been in charge of the program since 2002.

GHS hosts Peoria Christian this afternoon. 4/14/8 Reynolds Hired As New GHS Boys Basketball Coach A man who guided the Bismarck-Henning varsity boys basketball team to 118 wins since 2003 is taking over the reigns of the boys basketball program at Galesburg High School. The District 205 School board unanimously approved the hiring of Mike Reynolds, an Orion High School graduate who had assistant coaching stints at Cambridge, United Township and Danville. He was on the coaching staff at U-T when the Panthers captured the first outright Western Big Six title. Reynolds' teams at Bismarck-Henning compiled a record of 118-39, including a 29-3 mark and a #4 state ranking in Class 2-A this past season before falling in the sectional championship game to state qualifier Olney-East Richland.
GHS BOYS BASETBALL COACH TO BE HIRED TONIGHT The District 205 School Board is expected to vote on a committee's recommendation of a new boys basketball coach at tonight's meeting. The five-person committee received 24 applications for the position, and last week reportedly reached a verbal agreement with an un-named candidate. The new coach replaces Jeff Houston, who the school board dismissed last month after five seasons on the bench. Other area boys vacancies include Knoxville, Moline and Geneseo while there are girls head coaching vacancies at Knoxville and Rock Island.

The Tigers win was against Pekin (5-2). 3/28/8 GHS Boys Basketball Coach Application Deadline Today A Galesburg High School official says the school has received quite a few letters of applications for the head varsity boys basketball position. Today is the application deadline, and Athletic Director Ralph Henning says several of the un-named applicants who's materials he's seen are what he calls "impressive" and says there are some solid candidates. Henning did not say how many people have applied for the position. He says the next step involves the interview committee reviewing the applications and determining the qualified candidates to be interviewed immediately after today's deadline. Henning says the interview committee is comprised of him, personnel director Diane VanHootegem, GHS principal Tom Chiles, a current high school teacher who has had a son in the basketball program and a community member who is also a former Streak basketball player. Henning says if things go well, officials hope to recommend a candidate at the April 14th school board meeting.
3/20/8 Knoxville Hoops Coaches Resign Knoxville High School has two varsity basketball coaching vacancies after last night's District 202 Board meeting. Following a three-hour executive session that ended around 12:15 this morning to cover administrator evaluations and other employment issues, the board voted to accept the resignations of boys basketball coach Hank Gordon and girls coach Rick Kline. Gordon just finished his second season as the Blue Bullets boys coach, and Cleine's teams won 20 games in back to back seasons, the first time that had happened in school history. No reasons were given for the resignations. The search for replacements begins immediately and the school district hopes to fill the vacancies by May.
3/14/8 GHS Girls Basketball Players Recongnized by Quad City Times A Galesburg girls basketball player is being selected to the Quad City Times all-area second team. Kelly Rickets, a senior center, averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds a game for the Silver Streaks while shooting 51 percent from the field this past season. Ricketts is joined on the second team by Moline's Susie Francescon and Alleman's Mollie Yeargle. Galesburg seniors Taylor Young, Rachel Pendry and Kelli Jo Hinkle were named honorable mention.

CSC's Larson Signs With Iowa Wesleyan Carl Sandburg College is announcing that Heather Larson signed with Iowa Wesleyan last night. CSC coach Mike Bailey says Larson chose Iowa Wesleyan so her parents could continue to watch her play and the academic choices that Iowa Wesleyan offered. Larson led the Chargers to a 27-9 record, Arrowhead Conference and Region IV championships, and a 6th place finish at the NJCAA Division IINational Tournament. She was a 2nd Team All-American, 1st Team All Conference, 1st Team All Region, MVP of the Region IV Tournament, and was named to the All Tournament Team at nationals. Larson averaged 13.5 points., 4 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game this past season. 4/28 Results: The Carl Sandburg College baseball team won a double header against Kishwaukee College yesterday. CSC won the first game 7-6 and completed the sweep with a 7-4 win in the nightcap. Sandburg's record now stands at 19-13, including a 13-3 mark in conference play. 4/29/8 Lewis and Lewis to Play Basketball at CSC The Carl Sandburg College men's basketball program will add two standout players from Williamsfield to next year's squad. CSC head coach Ryan Twaddle says both Patrick and Kevin Lewis will sign to play for the Chargers on Thursday afternoon. Willems MWC Performer of the Week A Monmouth College softball player is being recognized for her achievements on the field. Senior shortstop Megan Willems has been named the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week. Willems hit .429 last week and helped the Fighting Scots earn their first conference tournament berth since 2004. 4/27/08 Results: Knox College split a baseball double-header yesterday with Grinnell College. Grinnell bested Knox in the first game 10-4, but the Prairie Fire rebounded to win the finale 12-2. The Monmouth College softball team boosted its record to the 500 mark with a pair of wins yesterday. The Scots (13-13, 5-3) beat Grinnell in both games of a double-header 5-4, 6-2 Monmouth College finished 5th and Knox College 8th in the Midwest Conference Men's Tennis Championships over the weekend. 4/27/08 Heimann Receives Surprise Honor Recently retired Knox College men's basketball coach Tim Heimann was treated to a surprise Saturday. College officials and the coach's family arranged a ceremony in which the new basketball court in Memorial Gym was dedicated and will be known as Tim Heimann Court. CSC's Joe Hoskins shot a one-over par 72. 4/21/8 Galesburg Native Named Midwest Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week Monmouth College Junior softball player Sarah Christensen is being recognized for her dominance on the mound last week. The Galesburg native has been named the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week. Christensen was 3-0 as a starter and also earned a save as Monmouth went 5-0 overall. Christensen tallied a 0.38 ERA with 16 strikeouts and four walks on the week.

College officials announced today that Wendy Rogers will not return as the head coach next season and Knox is beginning a search for her replacement immediately. The program has struggled in recent years. Rogers' record as coach of the Prairie Fire the past three seasons was 8-61 overall, including a 2-46 mark in Midwest Conference play.

4/8/8 Galesburg Hoops Standout Young Signs with CSC A Galesburg High School senior who's name is all over the Silver Streaks' girls basketball record books is staying in Galesburg for two more years. Taylor Young, a four-year starter for the Streaks who is the school's all-time leader in steals, finished 4th in assists, 10th in rebounds and 12th in points---signed a letter of intent this morning to attend and play basketball at Carl Sandburg College. An all-state and all-conference selection at Galesburg, Young says Sandburg's recent run of national tournament appearances weighed heavily on her choice. CSC coach Mike Bailey says Young's best attribute is her defense, which should allow the Chargers to etend the defense and press more next season. Young acknowledged she needs to work on her outside shot, but she's excited about the prospect of playing an up-tempo game at Sandburg, which recently finished 6th in the nation in NJCAA Division II.
